Carlisle surprised League One leaders Tranmere at Prenton Park on Saturday afternoon.

An early save from Mark Gillespie denied Tranmere a lead, with the hosts reduced to 10-men shortly past the half hour mark when Akpa Akpro was dismissed for “lashing out”.

Carlisle took advantage of their man advantage to break the deadlock on the stroke of half time through Rory Loy (44).

Tranmere pressed for a second half equaliser, being denied firstly by a goal line clearance and then an offside flag when Liam Palmer had the ball in the back of the net. Gillespie also made some saves to preserve a 1-0 win for Carlisle.
