Manager Micky Adams has said he was gutted to see Tranmere throw away a two goal lead in last night’s three two loss to Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Having taken the two goal lead through Myrie-Williams and Odejayi, we looked relatively comfortable and home and dry as we entered the final 15 minutes – despite pressure from Portsmouth trying to get themselves back in the game, but then it all fell apart in spectacular fashion leaving the gaffer shell shocked and gutted.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game a frustrated gaffer said.

‘I’m shell shocked. A bit of naivety, nerves, poor defending all comes into the equasion. We’re disappointed. For 75 minutes we’re well in the game and all that happens is they push three or four bodies against our back four and we couldn’t cope.’

Adams went on to say it wasn’t helped by having to change the back four following the hamstring injury picked up by Rob Taylor, and then losing Josh Thompson with double vision.

‘But having said that we’ve still got defenders who are capable of doing the job and we’ve just not coped. You’ve got to stop crosses and we’d done that for 75 minutes. Tubbs and Taylor had very little joy, but we’ve switched off, a cross has come in and Westcarr is there on his own. It should never happen.’

Adams goes on to say it was very difficult for him to take because it was avoidable and he knows it would have been difficult for the fans to take given the way we capitulated.

‘I must applaud them for travelling all the way down here and they’ll go home, disappointed and scratching their head. The first half was a fantastic performance. We silenced the crowd, disrupted them and they’ve had to change their shape to combat what we were doing. Then they got nervous and tried to protect what they’d got. The message at half time was don’t do that. Let’s go for the second goal and if we do that go and get the third.’

The biggest frustration is Adams knows he has to pick them up again now and dust them down and search for the positives from the match, but in a very avoidable situation we have just blown a great opportunity for a good away win.
