Manager Rob Edwards has said he felt there was an extra edge in training today from the players because everybody is relishing the game on Saturday.

We open our League Two campaign with a game against York City this weekend, and speaking to the Official Site the gaffer explained that he could see the difference as players look to cement their spot in the line up for the first time properly in 2014-15.

‘Training was good this morning. The players are all looking forward to Saturday. They’re looking fit, in good spirits and working together nicely. It will be a special occasion for me to take charge of my first competitive game for Tranmere and I’m really pleased it’s at Prenton Park.’

Edwards says that obviously for the fans they will be seeing a few players make their competitive debuts as well, and he can assure supporters that the players are as keen to start brightly as he is and get us off to a good start following the disappointment of last season.

As for the new additional to our ranks, Edwards has also today announced the capture of Clayton McDonald.

The centre half has been on trial with us this summer and the 25 year old has signed non contract terms as Edwards wants to take a longer look at him, given the glimpses he showed in games against Everton, Bolton and Chester.

‘Clayton isn’t quite there with his fitness yet but I’ve been encouraged by what I’ve seen in training and the games and agreeing non contract terms with him means he can be included in our squad. He’ll get better the fitter he gets and we can sit down and discuss his future with him then.’

McDonald started life at Manchester City before moving onto Walsall and Port Vale. He spent last season with Grimsby Town.
