Mahon only spent one year at Sporting Lisbon but managed to get Champions League experience under his belt playing against Real Madrid in the Bernabéu,he then joined Blackburn Rovers for a fee of £1.5 million and won the League Cup with Blackburn.

He spent three years at Blackburn and then joined Wigan Athletic and was part of the side that gained promotion to the Premier League, then in 2006 he joined Burnley for a fee of £200,000.

Manager John Barnes admitted he was delighted to have secured the former Ireland International, Barnes said:

‘It’s great to have Alan back as he is a very talented midfielder.

‘We’re fortunate to have got a player of Alan’s quality to commit himself to the Club for three seasons. He is a former favourite of the Tranmere fans and I’m sure they’ll look forward to seeing him in action again at Prenton Park.

‘He will add experience to what will be a young squad next season.’
