Assistant manager John McMahon has admitted we were beaten by the better side in the game against Brentford last night, but he still has the belief that we can turn our form around and get ourselves back our of the bottom four.

Speaking to the Official Site following the two nil loss, McMahon said.

‘I thought they were the better side. They’ve got better players and when you come to a place like this you expect them to have more of the ball but we’re disappointed. We needed the ones that hit the woodwork to go in for us. We can make excuses all day long, we can blame the referee but at the end of the day they were the better side.’

McMahon goes on to say that his job mainly at the moment is to try and give the side confidence and belief so they go out with freedom and play to their best because he knows at that level we are a match for anyone, but confidence is the hardest thing to come by in football and it seriously affects your play and that’s what we are paying for really.

He also says that whatever encouragement he gives them, there is a big difference between composure and being casual and unfortunately to begin with we were very casual, and even though we were funnelling them into the areas of the pitch we wanted them to go in, we then failed to deal with them effectively, so what should’ve been a strength for us ended up a weakness.

‘I said to the players I’m more disappointed with Saturday’s game still, we did get a reaction tonight, the lads did have a go.’

Sadly it wasn’t enough of a go, and not enough to turn our luck and form round.

In some ways, Notts County are in an even worse state that us, so playing them next on balance should give us a good shot of three points which would do everyone the world of good.

‘There’s enough in that dressing room still with spirit, still with fight, still with character and still with ability to get us out of the whole that we’re obviously in.’

McMahon’s task is to choose 11 of them.
