Defender Martin Riley has today joined Tranmere on a 12 months deal subject to a medical.

The 28 year old 6ft 3in centre half has spent the last two seasons with Mansfield Town. In his second spell at the One Call Stadium he made 64 appearances for them in League Two, and his first spell at the club saw him play his part in helping them to the Conference Play Offs – he also reached the Play Offs in his spell with Wrexham, also lifting the FA Trophy.

Speaking to the Official Site having secured the move, manager Gary Brabin explained.

‘I`m delighted to bring Martin to the Club. He`s a good competitor who has played alongside Ritchie Sutton before so there is a good understanding already between them. He has good experience of this league and the one above so I`m sure he`ll be an excellent acquisition for the Club.’

Riley himself pointed to the size of Tranmere and the fact that we shouldn’t be where we are outside of the Football League.

‘I’m delighted to put pen to paper and get it sorted. It’s a massive club. The gaffer has great desire to get us out of the league. I always said that if I was going to drop down the division that it would have to be for someone who was going to be contending for the title, and I’m satisfied that is going to be the case here.’
