A Tranmere side managed by John Barnes’ assistant, Jason McAteer, were victorious at Gayton Park.

Compared to the side put out at Cammell Lairds, this side was much weaker with many youth and trialist players getting a run out with some experienced players in the mix too such as Ian Moore, Alan Mahon and Chris Shuker. Jon Welsh also started the game.

Ian Moore’s experience proved to be vital as he bagged both goals for the Rovers side. The first goal was a neat header from an Alan Mahon cross and his second was a cool finish when one-on-one with the Heswall goalkeeper.
