Huddersfield 3-3 Tranmere

I was at the game and thought it was a good game of football to be fair. I’m delighted to come away with a point but feel we could have won it were it not for a contentious decision from the linesman not to flag for a penalty early in the second half. That said, I’d have taken a point before kick off so I’m happy.

The first Huddersfield goal was poor defending from Goodison, who let Novak of all people (probably one of the smallest players on the field) outmuscle him but credit to Novak, it was a top finish from a tight(ish) angle. When it went in I was expecting the worst but to see us hit back so quickly was fantastic. Gornell made a great run and forced Smithies into a good save which he parried straight to Thomas-Moore, who was never going to miss.

The first half wasn’t that great but I was very happy to be level at the break. I thought we defended well enough and deserved to be level at the break. I thought Huddersfield would go on to win though as they had looked threatening throughout, the wingers in particular were causing problems but Rhodes had an off night I think and was subbed early in the second half.

Huddersfield’s second had some element of fortune about it if I’m honest. From what I saw, it was a huge scramble in our box and the ball broke kindly for Collins, who produced a good finish with his left foot to curl the ball into the bottom corner for a 2-1 Town lead. Not bad for a headless chicken!

Our second equaliser was not too dissimilar from Huddersfield’s opener. Curran got the wrong side of the defender and finished well into the bottom corner to get us back on terms again. We had a good spell after this and Smithies made a top save to deny Welsh a stunning goal from range. We were winning a fair few corners but weren’t taking advantage and we paid for it as the game went into the latter stages.

Peltier made a good run down the right and crossed for Kay of all people to score! I’m not sure if he celebrated or not but either way I didn’t boo him as I was too busy backing the team to get a point. After Kay scored I said to my cousin ‘We’ll score again within 5 minutes’ and sure enough, we did.

We won a free-kick near the corner flag and Ricketts came on for Gornell, who’d worked hard, and poked the ball over the line (just) to spark scenes of what could only be described as pandemonium in the Pink Link. FWIW, I was near the front of the stand and could see the goal-line clearly when your lad cleared it but then again I would say that! Fair play to the liner for giving it though.

We’re now joint bottom with Wycombe and Stockport and only goal difference puts us bottom (thanks Barnes). Hopefully 4 very good points in a week will kick-start our revival. We have a huge game against Brentford on Saturday which is quite simply a must win for us. Huddersfield travel to Leeds for the Yorkshire derby, which should be a cracking match!

Picking a man of the match for either side is difficult as all our lads put in a shift, as did Huddersfield’s. If I had to pick I’d say Curran for us and Roberts for Town. Honourable mentions to Marlon Broomes and Shay Logan of Tranmere and Lee Peltier of Huddersfield.

Obviously compared to recent performances, Town fans will be disappointed with the performance but I don’t think they could begrudge us a point which, IMO, was fully deserved.

Overall, I had a great night which included wild celebrations with people I don’t even know, which is all a part of the beauty of awaydays. It’s a shame that a Huddersfield fan decided to have a go at me for no apparent reason, mind.

I’d stayed behind to take a picture inside the stadium so I was a bit behind my mate so I ran and jumped on him and then this Hudders fan says to me ‘How would you like to be a piece of scum?’ No idea what he was on about so I was like ‘What you on about?’ then he mentioned something about the Scouse accent which confused me even more. He seemed a bit bitter to me so I just told him to walk away and we’ll see him same time next season. Mug.

Good night overall though, as I said.
