After a popular petition was set up by the users of roversreaguard (the petition has currently achieved over 3000 signatures) the possibility of John getting a testimonial seemed fair and hopeful. However the club stated that John had declined all contracts offerered to him. The official statement expressed that a testimonial was discussed but John made further arrangements. We hit upon this story in a previous article but today our arguement was confirmed when icwirral reported Achterberg saying that ‘he ‘strongly disagreed’ with Tranmere’s version of events but was reluctant to be drawn into detailed response’

John Achterberg also insisted:

‘It may be better to leave people to make up their own minds about this issue, football moves on and the club is bigger than any player.’

Because of this the Club has been the target of much critism after it seemed that critical and truthful information may not have been given to the fans, and that the Club might have been trying to look more professional as an unpopular outlook pre-season may affect sales. Some have critisised other fans saying they’re concentrating too much on one issue instead of supporting the new season. We at Vital TRFC agree we should certainly concentrate on our next season, although we are defiant that the Club should honour and respect a player’s release and it should be approached immediately and truthfully.

Avoiding the truth surrounding financial situations or the release of player/s seems to be a trade in which Tranmere Rovers are best at. Especially after the recent release of Jason McAteer which was said to have been at a mutual agreement, however according to a SkySports interview with McAteer himself, he stresses that the news of his release had come as a shock to him and he was dissapointed.

Tranmere also suggested in their statement

‘Unfortunately the way in which financial negotiations take place in football means there is little room for emotion.’

Perhaps the Club meant,
‘Little room for truth and respect’ ???
