The Northern Ireland Under-17 coach Kenny Shiels officially takes his place as Head of Youth and Centre of Excelence Manager on June 11th 2007.

Rovers have been looking to fill the vacancy on the youth deaprtment after School of Excellence director Warren Joyce left Tranmere Rovers early in the season.

Shiels, a former manager of Coleraine, Ballymena, Larne and Carrick Rangers. But is most respected for his work surrounding the the Northern Irish Football Association as a county youth coach.

Shiels said:

‘I’m thrilled to join Tranmere and look forward to the challenge. The Club has a big tradition of producing top quality young players and I hope to continue that trend. I’m keen to work alongside Shaun and Warwick and add my own ideas and experience to the Youth department.’

Rovers Youth Development Officer, Warwick Rimmer added:

‘I am looking forward to working alongside Kenny and helping the Club produce more talented young footballers. Continuity is important in Youth Development and Kenny will add to the experience of Shaun, myself and all of the Centre of Excellence coaches and scouts at Tranmere.’

Rimmer finished by saying:

‘It will also reopen our contacts within Ireland which we had in the late 1990’s.’

Tranmere Rovers Manager, Ronnie Moore agreed:

‘Kenny comes with great experience in youth coaching and I’m delighted to welcome him to the backroom staff. Countless players have come through the Youth system at Tranmere and Kenny’s appointment should ensure the tradition continues.’
