Ex Tranmere midfielder Jason Koumas currently at Premier League club Wigan has announced his retirement from International football with Wales.

Koumas made his decision after he said he would miss Wednesdays World Cup qualifier with Russia in Cardiff.

The Wigan midfielder made his Wales debut in 2001 against Ukraine whilst he was at Tranmere, in total Koumas has 34 caps for the Welsh and has scored 10 times in the process.

Manager John Toshack was a huge admirer of Koumas but dropped him from the national side a couple of months ago as he was not playing regularly enough in the Premiership. Recently new Wigan boss Roberto Martinez hailed Koumas as a ‘genius`.

However his decision to retire from Wales is a good time for the Welsh as they are developing talented midfielders such as Joe Ledley, Aaron Ramsey, David Edwards and Joe Allen.
